古英語の any（ænig「どれでも」）と way（weg「道・方法」）に、古い副詞語尾 -s が付いた形です。もともとは「どんな方法ででも」で、そこから「いずれにせよ・とにかく」の意味になりました。関連語は anyhow、way です。
