「apostasy」は後期ラテン語apostasia、さらにギリシャ語apostasiaに由来する。apo-「離れて」+ stasis「立つ・立場」から成り、関連語に apostate, static がある。つまり「立っていた信仰や立場から離れること」が、背教の意味になった。
