archdeaconry
大助祭管区
解説 Definition
キリスト教会の組織で、大助祭が管轄する区域や管理単位を指します。通常は教区の中に置かれ、複数の小教区などを監督する範囲として使われます。
An archdeaconry is an area of a Christian church that is managed by an archdeacon. It is an administrative division inside a larger church region such as a diocese. This word is mainly used in formal religious contexts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
archbishop や archenemy の arch- を見たら「上位・筆頭」を連想。deacon が教会の役職だと分かれば、archdeacon は「上位の助祭」。さらに -ry が付くと、人そのものではなく「その職位・管区」になりやすいと押さえる。つまり archdeaconry は「大助祭その人」ではなく、大助祭が受け持つ役職や管轄区域。church administration や oversee parishes の文脈と結び付けると定着しやすい。
Use the parts: `arch-` often means chief or higher, as in `archbishop`. A `deacon` is a church role, and `-ry` often names an office or area, not a person. So `archdeaconry` is easier to remember as the office or district of an archdeacon, not the archdeacon himself.

archdeaconry の語源・成り立ち Etymology
archdeaconry は archdeacon + 接尾辞 -ry で、「大助祭の職・管区」を表す語。archdeacon は後期ラテン語 archidiaconus、さらにギリシャ語 archi-「長」+ diakonos「仕える人」に由来し、deacon や diaconal と同根なので「上位の助祭の管轄」と分かる。
Archdeaconry comes from archdeacon + -ry, a suffix used for an office, area, or domain. Archdeacon goes back through Late Latin archidiaconus to Greek archi- "chief" and diakonos "servant" or "minister," the same root seen in deacon. So the word originally meant the office or district of a senior deacon in the church.
