解説 Definition
「as though」はまるで〜であるかのようにという意味の接続詞で、想像や印象を述べるときに使う。実際とは違っていても話し手にはそのように感じられるという含みを持たせることが多い。後ろには節が続き、その行動や表情がどう見えるかを説明する。

as though は as if とほぼ同じで、「現実そのもの」ではなく「そう見える・そう感じられる」という距離感を出す表現だと覚えると残りやすいです。like と違って後ろに節が続く点も重要で、He stared at me as though he knew me. のように使います。特に looked, sounded, seemed と相性がよく、「まるで何も起きなかったかのように」のような“見た目・印象・演技っぽさ”の場面とセットで覚えると定着します。

asは古英語eallswā（まったくそのように）の短縮形、thoughは古英語þēah（にもかかわらず）に由来。「あたかもそうであるかのように」と仮定を示す接続詞句。関連語：although（～だけれども）、thorough（徹底的な、同じゲルマン語根）。
