asは古英語eallswā（まったくそのように）の短縮形、thoughは古英語þēah（にもかかわらず）に由来。「あたかもそうであるかのように」と仮定を示す接続詞句。関連語：although（～だけれども）、thorough（徹底的な、同じゲルマン語根）。
