古英語cnāwan（知る、認識する）の過去形。印欧祖語*ǵneh₃-（知る）に遡り、ラテン語cognoscere、ギリシャ語gnōsis（知識）と同根。関連語：know, knowledge, cognition。語頭のkは古英語では発音されていたが、近代英語で黙字化した。
