Asphalt is a dark, sticky petroleum-based material used with mineral aggregate to surface roads and other paved areas. The word may also refer informally to a road or surface made from this material.

The Japanese loanword points to the same road material, but the English word ends in a consonant sound rather than an added final vowel. Picture workers spreading hot, black asphalt and then a bicycle moving over the smooth finished surface. This connects both common senses: the paving material and the paved surface itself. Useful combinations include hot asphalt, wet asphalt, asphalt pavement, an asphalt road, and spread or lay asphalt. Do not automatically replace it with concrete, which is a different paving material made mainly with cement.

Asphalt entered English through Latin and French from Greek asphaltos, a word for natural bitumen. The term originally referred to the dark, sticky mineral substance found in natural deposits. As bituminous material became widely combined with stone and other aggregate for paving, asphalt developed its familiar modern association with roads and paved surfaces. Asphaltic is the related adjective used for substances or materials containing or resembling asphalt.
