ラテン語 attemptare（試みる）から。ad-（〜に向かって）+ temptare（触れる、試す）の合成語。tempt（誘惑する）やtemptation（誘惑）と同根。「対象に手を伸ばして触れてみる」が原義で、そこから「挑戦する・試みる」の意味に発展した。
