attenuation はラテン語 attenuare に由来し、ad-「〜へ」+ tenuis「薄い、細い」が核です。tenuous や extenuate も同じ tenuis の仲間で、「強さをだんだん薄くする」感覚が、音や光の「減衰」にそのままつながります。
Attenuation comes from Latin attenuare, built from ad- and tenuis, meaning "thin" or "fine." Its earliest sense was making something thinner or weaker. That idea later developed into the weakening of sound, light, or force, and the same root appears in tenuous and extenuate.
