Autosomal describes something related to the chromosomes that are not sex chromosomes. It is mainly used in genetics and medicine, especially when talking about inherited traits or disorders.

遺伝の話で見たら、まず sex-linked（伴性）との対比で覚えると定着しやすい語。autosomal inheritance は「性染色体ではなく、ふつうの染色体に乗る遺伝」。特に autosomal dominant / autosomal recessive という形で頻出するので、熟語ごと覚えるのが近道。語尾 -al は「〜に関する」なので、autosome + -al で「常染色体に関する」と機械的に読める。sex-linked ではない側、とセットで置くと混同しにくい。

autosomal は autosome + -al で、autosome は auto- とギリシャ語 soma「身体」から作られた語です。性染色体ではなく「体の側の染色体」という発想がそのまま「常染色体の」という意味につながり、関連語は somatic、somatology です。
Autosomal comes from autosome plus the adjective ending -al. Autosome was formed from auto- and Greek soma, meaning "body," with the idea of a chromosome belonging to the body rather than to sex.
