解説 Definition

balancing は balance(バランスを取る)の現在分詞・動名詞です。重さや量、予定、考え方などが偏らないように調整することを表します。

Balancing is the present participle or gerund of balance. It means keeping something physically steady or adjusting two or more competing demands, amounts, or qualities so that neither receives too much or too little attention.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

balance の現在分詞・動名詞で、語末の e を落として -ing を付ける。天秤の二つの皿が釣り合う像を核に、balance a book の物理的な安定と、balance work and study の両立を結びつける。二つの要素を偏らないよう調整する感覚で覚える。

Balancing comes from balance: drop the final e and add -ing. Use the image of a two-pan scale, with both sides adjusted until neither falls. That image works for physical balance, as in balancing a book on your head, and for abstract choices, as in balancing work and study or balancing cost and quality. The word suggests active, continuing adjustment rather than a permanently perfect state. Grammatically, it can appear in a continuous verb such as is balancing or act as a gerund, as in Balancing work and study is difficult.

例文

She is balancing a book on her head.

balancing の語源・成り立ち Etymology

後期ラテン語bilanx(bi-「二つの」+lanx「皿」)が語源で、天秤の二つの皿を意味した。古フランス語balanceを経て英語に。関連語:bilateral(二国間の)、biennial。二つの皿が釣り合う様子から「均衡」の意味が生まれた。

Balance entered English through Old French balance from Late Latin bilanx, a term for a two-pan scale. Bilanx combines bi-, “two,” with lanx, “dish” or “scale pan.” The concrete image of two dishes held level produced the broader senses of physical stability, equal proportion, and careful adjustment between competing concerns. Balancing is formed by dropping the final e of balance and adding -ing.
