retailer は retail（小売する）+ -er（〜する人）です。retail は古フランス語 retaillier「切り分ける」に由来し、re-（再び）+ taillier（切る）から成るため、tailor や detail と同じく「細かく切る」感覚から「小売業者」の意味になりました。
Retailer comes from retail + the agent ending -er. Retail came through Old French from a verb meaning "to cut up again" or "divide into small pieces," built from re- + taillier, "to cut."
