16世紀英語。語源は不詳だが、初めは「酒をいろいろ混ぜたごた混ぜ飲み物」を指し、そこから「言葉のごた混ぜ」つまり「たわごと」へ転じたとされる。後半は dash と結びつけて考えられることがあり、乱雑さが語感に残る。
Balderdash is recorded in English from the 16th century, but its exact origin is unknown. At first it seems to have meant a mixed or jumbled drink, and from there it shifted to the idea of a confused mixture of words. That sense of messy nonsense remains in the modern word.
