hogwash は hog「豚」+ wash「洗い水・残飯汁」の複合語で、hog も wash も古英語系の語です。元は豚のえさのどろどろした汁を指し、そこから「まともに相手にできない話」へ転じて「たわごと」となりました。関連語は hog と wash です。
