帯状模様

banding は band(帯状にする、帯でくくる)に由来する現在分詞・動名詞です。色や模様が帯のように現れること、またはものを帯でまとめることを表します。
Banding is the formation or presence of stripes, bars, or visibly distinct layers on a surface, as on an animal, rock, or image. As the -ing form of band, it can also describe the act of fastening or grouping things with a band.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 band「帯にする・帯でまとめる」に -ing を付けた現在分詞・動名詞で、つづりはそのまま banding、発音は /ˈbændɪŋ/ です。鳥の翼、岩の層、画像の色などに band のような横長の区切りが連続して現れる場面を思い浮かべ、clear banding や color banding のまとまりで覚えましょう。
Connect banding directly with the verb band and the noun band. A band is a strip, so banding often describes strips of color or material appearing across something, such as a bird’s wings, layers of rock, or a digital image. It is formed regularly by adding -ing to band: band becomes banding, pronounced /ˈbændɪŋ/, without doubling or dropping a letter. Learn it in combinations such as clear banding, wing banding, and color banding. The central picture is a surface divided into visible bands.

banding の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古ノルド語のband(結び紐)に由来し、接尾辞-ingで名詞化した形です。bind(縛る)やbond(結びつき)と同系統で、物に帯を巻き付けたような縞を連想させます。この形象から、「帯状模様」を意味するようになりました。
Banding is formed from band plus the suffix -ing. Band entered English from Germanic sources, including Old Norse band, meaning something that binds, and is historically related to bind and bond. The literal idea is a strip or fastening placed around something. From that image, banding developed uses for fastening objects with bands and for stripes or layers that resemble bands on animals, rocks, designs, and images.
