覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

bar と man をそのまま組み合わせた語で、バーのカウンター内で飲み物を作り、客に出す男性を指します。特にイギリス英語で見られ、hotel barman や ask the barman のように使います。性別を限定しない bartender に対し、barman は男性であることを明示する点を覚えましょう。

The structure gives the meaning directly: bar plus man means a man who works behind a bar. Picture the typical duties in the examples—taking orders, pouring drinks, recommending a local beverage, and keeping the counter clean. The word is especially common in British English. Compare it with bartender, which is widely used without specifying gender, and barmaid, the traditional term for a woman doing the same work. Useful combinations include “hotel barman,” “friendly barman,” and “ask the barman.”

barman の語源・成り立ち Etymology

bar「酒場のカウンター」+ man「人」の複合語です。bar は古フランス語 barre「横木・仕切り」にさかのぼり、客と内側を隔てる「棒・仕切り」から酒場のカウンターを指すようになったため、barman は「バーで働く人」つまりバーテンダーです。関連語は barrier, barmaid。

Barman is a transparent compound of bar and man. Bar originally referred to a rod or barrier, from Old French barre. It later named the physical counter or partition separating customers from the area where drinks were stored and served, and then the drinking establishment itself. Adding man produced the occupational noun barman, literally a man working at the bar. The term has been recorded especially in British usage.
