A baud is a unit for the speed of a communication signal. It means the number of signal changes sent each second, especially in older computer and telephone systems. It is often used when talking about modems or serial connections, and it is not always exactly the same as bits per second.

baud の語源・成り立ち Etymology
baud は通信速度の単位で、19世紀フランスの技術者ジャン＝モーリス＝エミール・ボードー Baudot の姓に由来し、接頭辞や語根に分ける語ではありません。Baudot code や Baudot system に名が残り、人名がそのまま技術用語になったと見ると覚えやすいです。
Baud comes from the surname of the French engineer Jean-Maurice-Emile Baudot. It is not built from older roots or prefixes in the usual way. His name stayed in technical terms such as Baudot code, and later became the name of the unit.
