beheld の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 behealdan(be-=強意 + healdan=保つ・見守る)の過去形。目を留めてじっと見守るのが原義。hold(保つ)と同根で、beholder(見る者)も同系。「しっかり保持する→注視する」と意味が移った。

Beheld is the inherited past-tense and past-participle form of behold. Behold comes from Old English behealdan, built from the prefix be- and healdan, “to hold, keep, or observe.” Its earlier senses involved keeping watch or directing sustained attention toward something. The verb is therefore historically related to hold, whose past form held also helps explain the vowel and consonant pattern seen in beheld.
