フランス語 bergamote、さらにイタリア語 bergamotta に由来し、もとはトルコ語 beg armudu「王子の梨」にさかのぼる有力説があります。最初は梨の名で、香りの近さから柑橘にも移り、語感ごと受け継がれました。関連語は pear。
