人・組織・考え・出来事などとの結びつきを意識的に断つ、または切り離して考えることを表す動詞。評判の悪い人物や事件から距離を置く場合にも、二つのものを別々のものとして扱う場合にも使われる。
Disassociate means to separate yourself from a person, group, idea, or action, or to disconnect things from each other. It is often used when someone does not want to be linked with something negative or unwanted. In psychology, it can also describe a mental separation from thoughts, feelings, or experiences.

associate を知っていれば覚えやすい語。associate は「関連づける・付き合う」なので、先頭の dis- を見たら「結び付きを外す」と考えるとよいです。人については disassociate oneself from ... で「…とは関係ない立場を取る・距離を置く」、物事なら disassociate A from B で「AとBを切り離して考える」。単に離れるより、意識的に関係を断つ感じが強いのがポイント。悪評・責任・事件から身を引く文脈で出やすく、つづりが似た dissociate とほぼ同義なので混同にも注意。
If you know `associate`, then `dis-` gives the opposite idea: to break or remove a connection. Remember the useful pattern `disassociate oneself from ...`, often used when someone wants distance from blame or a bad image. It is more active and deliberate than simply moving away.
