ビデ

解説 Definition

bidet は、下半身を洗うための衛生器具「ビデ」という意味です。日本語のカタカナ語と近い意味ですが、英語では独立した洗浄器具を指すことが多く、日本の温水洗浄便座そのものとは限りません。

A bathroom fixture or device that directs water for washing the genital and anal areas after using the toilet. Traditionally it is a separate low basin, although modern forms may be attached to a toilet seat or toilet bowl.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

日本語の「ビデ」と対応しますが、英語の bidet はトイレ横の独立した低い洗浄器具を指すことが多く、日本の温水洗浄便座とは必ずしも同じではありません。フランス語で元は「小馬」を意味し、器具をまたぐ姿との連想で名付けられました。use a bidet、a bidet next to the toilet を場面ごと覚えましょう。

Connect bidet with a bathroom fixture used for washing with water after using the toilet. The historical French word meant a small horse or pony, and the name was applied to the low fixture because a user traditionally sat astride it. Picture a separate basin beside a toilet, which is a common meaning in English. A bidet can also be an attachment or an electronic seat, but the word does not automatically mean the particular heated toilet seats familiar in Japan. Useful phrases include use a bidet, install a bidet, and bidet attachment.

bidet の語源・成り立ち Etymology

bidet はフランス語で元は「小馬・ポニー」を意味し、おそらく中世フランス語 bider「小走りする」にさかのぼります。低い器具をまたいで使う姿が小馬に乗る感じに見えたため、洗浄器具の名になりました。英語の一般的な同語根語はほぼありません。

English borrowed bidet from French. In French, the word originally referred to a small horse or pony and was probably connected with a verb meaning “to trot.” It later became the name of the low washing fixture, traditionally explained by the way a person sat astride it as if riding a small horse. The bathroom sense entered English with the imported French object and its name.
