billon はフランス語 billon に由来し、もとは「丸太の小片・地金の塊」を表す語が、卑金属まじりの貨幣用合金を指すようになりました。金属をまず「小さな塊」と見た感覚が残っており、billet と並べると、素材のかたまりから貨幣名が育った流れが見えます。
Billon comes from French billon. It first meant a small piece or lump of metal, probably linked to the same family as billet. From that sense of a metal lump or base metal material, it later came to mean a coin alloy with a large amount of less valuable metal.
