blend は古英語 blandan、または古ノルド語 blanda に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *blandan「混ぜる」へさかのぼる語。接辞はなく語幹そのものが核で、混ぜると境目がにごって一つに見える感覚が元。関連語に blending、blender がある。
Blend goes back to Old English blandan and Old Norse blanda, from a Germanic root meaning "mix." The basic idea was combining things until their boundaries became less clear. From that old sense, English kept both the literal and more general idea of mixing into one.
