adjective

枯かれた

解説 Definition

blighted は、植物が病気・害虫・その他の悪条件によって「枯れた・傷んだ」状態を表す形容詞です。被害を受けた作物、葉、木などを説明します。

Damaged, withered, or destroyed by plant disease, pests, or other harmful conditions. In this sense, the adjective describes crops, leaves, trees, or other plants that have been seriously affected by blight.

使い方 Usage

  • blight の過去形・過去分詞と同じ形です。この語義では blighted leaves や a blighted crop のように、植物を表す名詞を修飾します。 Blighted has the same form as the past tense and past participle of blight. In this sense, it modifies plant nouns, as in blighted leaves or a blighted crop.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

blight「植物を枯らす・損なう」+ -ed で、被害を受けた後の姿を思い浮かべます。末尾が /t/ なので -ed は /ɪd/ と発音し、blighted は /ˈblaɪtɪd/ になります。

Start with blight, “to damage plants,” and add -ed. Picture the plant after the damage. Because blight ends in /t/, pronounce -ed as /ɪd/: blighted is /ˈblaɪtɪd/, with an added syllable.

例文

The farmer removed the blighted leaves from the tomato plants.

農家はトマトの苗から枯れた葉を取り除きました。

Several blighted trees stood at the edge of the field.

畑の端には枯れた木が数本立っていました。

blighted の語源・成り立ち Etymology

blighted は blight「枯らす・損なう」に -ed が付いた形です。blight 自体は語源不詳ですが、古ノルド語 blikna「青白くなる」や古英語の病名 blæce との関連が考えられ、もとは植物をしおれさせる病害を指しました。そこから「生気を奪われた」という今の意味へ広がりました。

Blighted is formed regularly from blight plus the past-tense and participial suffix -ed. Blight itself has an uncertain origin, although possible connections with older Germanic words concerning discoloration or disease have been proposed. Its early uses referred to a harmful influence that caused plants to wither or fail. The participle blighted consequently came to describe plants already affected by such damage and later developed broader figurative uses for things spoiled or devastated.
