impersonate は in-「…にする」+ person「人物」+ -ate「動詞化」から成り、person はラテン語 persona「役者の仮面」に由来します。person や personal も同根で、「別人の仮面をかぶってその人物になる」と捉えると、なりすます意味が鮮明です。
