本や書籍を収納する家具で、棚板に何冊も並べて整理できる。背が高いタイプは壁に立てかけたり部屋の一角に置いたりするのが一般的で、文庫や大型本も区分けできる。
A bookshelf is a piece of furniture with shelves for holding books. It can also be used to store magazines, decorations, or other small items in a home, office, or library.

book と shelf がそのまま合体した語なので、『本(book)が棚(shelf)にずらっと並ぶ』一場面で覚えるのが最短です。意味は足し算でほぼそのまま取れます。似た語の bookcase も本棚ですが、case は箱・家具全体の感じ、bookshelf は棚板そのものや開いた棚の感じが出やすい語。on the bookshelf, fill the bookshelf など“本を置く・並べる”場面でまとめて覚えると、単語だけでなく使い方まで残ります。

bookshelfはbook＋shelfの複合語。bookは古英語boc、さらにゲルマン祖語にさかのぼり、shelfは古英語scylfe「棚・岩棚」に由来する。『本を置く棚』という成り立ちがそのまま意味で、bookletやshelveも同系。
A compound of book and shelf. Book comes from Old English boc, from an older Germanic root, while shelf comes from Old English scylfe, meaning a ledge or platform. The word is very direct in origin: it simply meant a shelf for books.
