`broad` は「幅広い」、`leaf` は「葉」。まず語の形そのままで「広い葉をもつ木」と取れるようにするのが近道です。`broad` は broad shoulders, broad smile のように「横に広がる」感覚で覚えておくと、この語でも同じイメージが使えます。対になるのは針のような葉の `conifer`（針葉樹）。つまり broadleaf は、細い針葉ではない側の分類名。broadleaf tree / broadleaf forest の形で見たら、「樹種名」ではなく「葉のタイプで分けた呼び名」だと押さえると記憶に残りやすい。
