ラテン語 cancer「カニ・癌」に、形容詞語尾 -ous が付いた語です。腫瘍の周囲に広がる血管がカニの脚のように見えたためこの名が生まれ、「癌っぽい」がそのまま cancerous になりました。関連語の cancer や canker も同じ語根です。
Cancerous comes from Latin cancer, meaning both "crab" and "cancer," with the adjective ending -ous. In ancient medicine, the spreading shape of a tumor or its veins was compared to a crab's legs. From that, the word developed the sense "having the nature of cancer" or "affected by cancer."
