Carotene was formed in scientific French as carotène and entered English in the nineteenth century. Its name comes from French carotte, “carrot,” ultimately related to Latin carota and Greek karōton, because the pigment was identified in and strongly associated with carrots. The chemical suffix -ene is used in names of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Carotenoid was later built from the same base to denote the wider class of naturally occurring pigments related to carotene.
