解説 Definition
carotene は、ニンジンなどの食品に含まれる黄・橙・赤色の植物色素の一群「カロテン」です。βカロテンなど、体内でビタミンAに変わるものもあります。
Carotene is any of a group of yellow, orange, or red plant pigments found in foods such as carrots and leafy vegetables. Certain forms, especially beta-carotene, can be converted by the human body into vitamin A.

carotene はフランス語 carotene を経て、さらにラテン語 carota、ギリシャ語 karoton「ニンジン」に由来します。ニンジンから見つかった色素なので、「ニンジン由来の成分」という名づけがそのまま意味につながります。関連語は carrot, carotenoid です。
Carotene was formed in scientific French as carotène and entered English in the nineteenth century. Its name comes from French carotte, “carrot,” ultimately related to Latin carota and Greek karōton, because the pigment was identified in and strongly associated with carrots. The chemical suffix -ene is used in names of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Carotenoid was later built from the same base to denote the wider class of naturally occurring pigments related to carotene.
