Etymology
Chimpanzee entered English in the eighteenth century from a Bantu language of the Angola or Congo region, probably through a form resembling chimpenze. The precise path and original analysis of the African term are not completely certain, so the word should not be divided into English elements. The shortened form chimp developed later within English and is now common in less formal contexts, while chimpanzee remains the standard full name of the animal.
