フランス語 chaudière（大鍋）に由来し、ラテン語 caldaria（煮炊き用の鍋）から派生。calidus（熱い）が語根で、cauldron（大釜）や calorie（カロリー）と同根。北米の漁師が大鍋で作ったスープが名前の起源。
Chowder entered English through French chaudière, meaning a cauldron or large cooking pot, ultimately from Late Latin caldaria. That noun is related to Latin calidus, “hot,” and thus belongs to the same broad historical family as cauldron. The name of the cooking vessel became the name of the hearty soup prepared in it, particularly among fishing communities in North America.
