Clapboard is a type of long, thin wooden board used on the outside walls of buildings. It is also used to describe the style of siding made from these overlapping boards. The word is common in architecture and descriptions of traditional houses.

clapboard は中世オランダ語 klaphout／klapholt「割った板材」に由来するとされ、klap-「割る・打つ」＋ hout「木」と考えられます。木を薄く割った板を重ねて張る材料だったため下見板張りを指すようになり、語の成り立ちに clap が見えます。
"Clapboard" probably comes from Middle Dutch klaphout or klapholt, meaning "split wood" or "board wood." The first part is linked to the idea of splitting or striking, and hout means "wood." Because the word referred to thin boards split from timber and laid in overlapping rows, it later became the name for that kind of siding.
