徴兵

政府が国民に対して、軍隊に入隊することを強制する制度です。徴兵は、多くの国で若い男性に対して実施され、国の防衛力を保つために必要と考えられています。

conscription の語源・成り立ち Etymology
conscription はラテン語 conscribere「共に書き込む、名簿に記す」から来て、con-「共に」+ scribere「書く」に分かれます。関連語に scribe や script があり、もとは兵士の名簿を作ることなので、そこから「徴兵」の意味になりました。
Conscription comes from Latin conscriptio, from conscribere "to write down together, enroll." Its parts are con- "together" and scribere "to write," the same root seen in scribe and script. It first referred to making a list of names, and from military lists it came to mean compulsory service.
