ラテン語 contrarotulator（帳簿の副本で照合する人）に由来。contra-（対して）+ rotulus（巻物＝帳簿）が語根で、元は会計監査官を意味した。roll（巻物）や control（管理する）と同根。帳簿を照合して管理する人→制御する装置・人へと意味が拡大した。
Controller comes from the same history as control, from medieval Latin and Old French words linked to checking a second copy of an account roll. Its older root is Latin contra- "against" plus rotulus "roll" or "scroll," because accounts were once kept on rolled documents. The idea moved from "a person who checks records" to "a person or device that directs or regulates," and it is related to control and roll.
