A cordillera is a large chain or system of connected mountain ranges. This word is mainly used in geography and geology. It usually refers to a very wide mountain region rather than a single line of mountains.

cordilleraはスペイン語で、語源はラテン語chorda「ひも・綱」です。cord-「綱」に縮小の-ill-、場所を表す-eraが重なり、「綱のように連なるもの」が山脈になりました。cordやchordと同根と見ると、峰々が地表に張られた一本のロープのように思えてきます。
Cordillera entered English from Spanish cordillera. Its deeper source is Latin chorda, meaning "cord" or "string," with Spanish suffixes that gave the sense of something like a little cord or a corded line. The image is of a chain stretched out like a rope, which led to the meaning of a long mountain range. English cord and chord share the same ancient root.
