counter-（ラテン語contra「反対に」）+ example（ラテン語exemplum「見本」← eximere「取り出す」）の合成語。ある命題が偽であることを示す「反対の例」という意味。関連語: counterpart（対応物）、exempt（免除する）。語根eximereの「取り出す」が「見本として取り出す→例」に発展した。
Counterexamples is made from counter-, meaning "against" or "opposite," and examples, from Latin exemplum meaning "sample" or "pattern." The deeper root of example is eximere, "to take out," as if something is taken out to be shown as a model. So the whole word developed the sense of an example that goes against a claim and shows it is not always true.
