cult はラテン語 cultus「礼拝・世話・耕作」に由来し、さらに colere「耕す・住む・崇拝する」へさかのぼります。同じ語根に culture や cultivate があり、もとは「手をかけて育てること」から「崇拝集団」の意味へ発展しました。
Cult comes through French from Latin cultus, meaning “care, cultivation, or worship,” a noun related to colere, “to cultivate, inhabit, or worship.” Culture and cultivate ultimately belong to the same word family. The sense developed from the practice of religious worship to a system or group centered on such devotion, and later to an intensely devoted following outside religion.
