1791年、スウェーデンの植物学者ダール氏に因み新ラテン語で命名された。人名「Dahl」に植物属名を作る接尾辞「-ia」を接合した構成である。ジニアやベゴニアも同様で、学者の名に-iaを添えて分類名とする学術慣習が、そのまま花の名前に定着していることがわかる。
The flower was named in New Latin in 1791 in honor of the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl. His surname was combined with -ia, an ending commonly used when forming botanical genus names. The resulting genus name Dahlia later became the ordinary English name of the flower. This naming pattern resembles that seen in other plant names honoring people, including begonia and zinnia.
