Depreciated means reduced in value over time. It is often used in business and accounting for things like cars, machines, or buildings that become worth less as they age or are used.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
appreciate が「価値を認める・上がる」側なら、depreciate はその逆で「価値が下がる」側とセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。会計では depreciated asset や fully depreciated の形で出やすく、「時間経過や使用で価値が落ちた資産」の場面を思い浮かべるとよいです。なお software の deprecated とつづりが非常に紛らわしいですが、あちらは「非推奨」、こちらは「価値減少」です。

In accounting, this word often appears with `depreciation expense`, `fully depreciated`, and `balance sheet`, so connect it to assets losing book value over time. depreciated はラテン語 de-「下へ」と pretium「価格・価値」に由来する depreciate から来ています。もともと「価値を下げる」が原義なので、会計では減価償却された、一般には価値が落ちたという意味になります。関連語は price, appreciate です。
