ある民族・宗教・文化集団が故郷や本来の居住地を離れ、世界各地に分散して暮らすこと、またはその共同体を指す言葉。強制移住や移民の歴史と結び付くことが多く、現代では海外に広がる出身者集団全般にも用いられる。
A diaspora is a group of people from the same country, culture, or community who are living in many different places outside their original homeland. It is often used when talking about migration, history, and cultural identity.

diaspora はギリシャ語 diaspora に由来し、dia-「あちこちに」+ speirein「まく・散らす」から成ります。人々が種のように広く散っていくイメージがそのまま意味になっており、disperse や sperm も同じ散布の語根です。
Diaspora comes from Greek diaspora, from dia- meaning "across" and speirein meaning "to scatter" or "to sow."
