diploid はギリシャ語 diploos「二重の」と -oid「形の」を合わせた語で、「二組ある形」というのが原義です。diploma や diplopia も同じ diplo- 系で、染色体が対になってそろうので「二倍体」と呼ぶのだと腑に落ちます。
