To disavow something means to say clearly that you do not support it, accept it, or have any connection to it. It is often used when people reject a statement, action, belief, or relationship.

dis- は「打ち消す」、avow は「公に認める」と見れば、disavow は「認めるのを取り消し、距離を置く」。単なる deny より、発言・思想・人物・団体との関係を公式に否定する語。politician disavowed the remark, the group disavowed violence のように「自分の側から切り離す」場面で覚えると残りやすい。reject が物事を退ける語なら、disavow は『それは自分の立場ではない』と言って線を引く語。

disavow は古フランス語 desavouer から英語に入り、dis-「否定・反対」+ avow「公に認める」に分けられます。avow はさらにラテン語 advocare「呼び寄せる」にさかのぼり、もとは公に認めて後ろ盾になる感覚です。だから disavow は「認める」を打ち消して「否認する」となります。
Disavow came into English from Old French desavouer. It is made from dis-, meaning reversal or negation, and avow, meaning "to admit openly" or "declare publicly." Because avow had the sense of openly supporting or acknowledging something, disavow came to mean refusing or denying that support. The deeper root of avow is linked to Latin advocare, also seen in advocate.
