自分がどこにいるか、今何時か、または今が何月何年かを理解できない状態です。特に高齢者や病人がこのような状態に陥ることがあります。
Disorientation is a state of confusion in which a person does not clearly understand where they are, what time it is, or what is happening. It is often used in medical or psychological contexts. It can happen because of illness, injury, stress, or unfamiliar surroundings.

disorientationはdis-「失って・離れて」+ orientation「方向づけ」+ -ationから成る語です。orientはラテン語oriens「東、昇る太陽」に由来し、originとも同根。もとは東に向きを定める発想なので、それを失うと「見当がつかない」状態、すなわち見当識障害になります。
Disorientation is built from dis- "away from" or "loss of" and orientation. Orientation comes from orient, from Latin oriens, meaning "east" or "rising," linked to the rising sun. Since orienting yourself originally meant finding direction by the east, disorientation came to mean losing that sense of direction or mental bearing.
