duration はラテン語 durare「続く・長びく」に由来し、さらに durus「硬い」にさかのぼります。接尾辞 -ation は名詞化を表し、「硬くて変わりにくい」感覚から「続いている長さ」すなわち期間という意味になりました。同根語に durable、endure があります。
