encompass は en-「中へ・周囲に」と compass から成り、compass は後期ラテン語系で「一歩ずつ回って囲む」が原義です。そこから「ぐるりと取り囲む」ひいては「包含する」と発展し、関連語に compass、pace があり、範囲の中に収める感覚が見えます。
Encompass is made from en- and compass. Compass comes from a Late Latin form with the sense of "going around step by step," so the original picture is of moving around something to enclose it. From that, encompass developed from "surround" to the broader idea of "include"; pace is distantly related through the same root of stepping.
