eventide は古英語 æfen「夕べ」と tīd「時・季節」から成る古い複合語です。tide は今も「時期」の感覚を残し、noontide や Yuletide と同類なので、「一日のうち夕べの時」という成り立ちがそのまま夕方を表します。
