expendable は expend「使い果たす」に可能・適性を表す -able が付いた語で、もともとは「費やしてよい、使い切れる」という意味です。expend はラテン語 expendere にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」+ pendere「量る・つるす」から成り、expense や pension も同じ根を持ちます。
