Fencing is derived from fence, which was shortened in Middle English from defence. Defence came through Old French from Latin defensa, referring to protection or the act of warding something off. Fence developed a sense referring to the skill of defending oneself with a sword, and fencing became the name of that practice and later the regulated sport. The separate meaning involving barriers also developed from the broader idea of protection.
