gerrymander は知事 Gerry の姓と salamander を掛け合わせた1812年の造語。歪んだ選挙区がサンショウウオに見えた風刺画から生まれ、分解自体が意味を作る。salamandrine も同根で、「怪物のような区割り」という皮肉が伝わる。
Gerrymander was coined in 1812 from the surname of Governor Elbridge Gerry and `salamander.` It came from a political cartoon in which a strangely shaped voting district looked like a salamander. From that joke, the word came to mean shaping electoral districts in a biased way. Its form itself carries the satire.
