解説 Definition
gerrymandering は、特定の政党や集団に不公平な政治的利益を与えるよう、選挙区の境界を意図的に引いたり引き直したりすることです。日本語でも「ゲリマンダリング」と呼ばれます。

1812年、マサチューセッツ州知事 Elbridge Gerry が自党に有利な選挙区を設定し、その歪な形がサラマンダー（salamander）に似ていたことから Gerry + salamander で造語された。関連語に gerrymander（動詞）がある。人名と動物名の合成という珍しい語形成である。
The noun derives from gerrymander and the suffix -ing. Gerrymander was coined in Massachusetts in 1812 from the surname of Governor Elbridge Gerry and salamander. A newly drawn state senate district favoring Gerry's political party was represented in a newspaper cartoon as a salamander-like creature. The term later developed both verb and noun uses, while gerrymandering became the standard name for the practice.
