古英語 grislīc にさかのぼる語で、語幹 gris- には「震え上がる・恐れる」感覚があり、-ly は形容詞語尾です。近縁の grim にも「恐ろしい」気配が残り、見て身がすくむような感じから「ぞっとするような」になりました。
